[ale] can't open display

ok, so I rebooted. I was having a problem ( a few problems), and had some 
spare time:)
so I log back in to my gnome desktop, click on konqueror icon, and.... 
nothing. click on kmail icon... nothing.
I try them from a terminal window and I get the dreaded can't open 
display ....X:0 or whatever it was.

so I logged out & logged back in using KDE. kmail & konqy work.

the good news is videos are again working in firefox, they weren't before.

so, why won't konqueror & kmail work in gnome?
