[ale] [ALE-jobs] Fwd: Urgent Job Opening for LinuxAdministrator in Alpharetta, GA

Back in the 90s there was a huge demand for IT workers so contracting companies would rather continue to employ a temporarily idle person than to try to work on hiring a new one when another gig became available.

That pretty much ended with the tech bust because at that point there were more applicants than jobs.

I was permanently employed during the 90s. Even in that market whenever we got resumes of people that had more than 2 jobs in the last 2 years we'd pass on them. It was usually a sign they were job hopping for bigger and bigger payouts. I had changed jobs once and nearly doubled my salary within a year of changing but that was still only 2 jobs in a span of several years. It's one thing to take an opportunity when it comes your way but quite another to job hop. I recall the resume of one person who'd had 6 jobs in the last 2 years - we didn't even bother to interview him. Once the bust hit, people like that had a very hard time finding permanent gigs anywhere.

Of course on the flip side it did let me know to make certain that my resume clearly reflects which jobs were contracts so that anyone seeing the portion that was contacting understands it wasn't job hopping.

I've never done it, but I've had friends that were effectively
full-time contractors for years at a time. This is about 15 years
ago.

They would work full-time for a contract house and went wherever the
real client was..

The surprising thing to me is they would have downtime occasionally
weeks or even months long where they continued to be paid, but there
was no paying client.

iirc, they had to go to the contract house's office during the
downtime. I don't remember if they used the time for training, or
what.

Seems like one of my friends did this for about 10 years in the
1990-2000 time frame. He claimed it paid better than a true permanent
position and he got full benefits.
