I've never done it, but I've had friends that were effectively
full-time contractors for years at a time.  This is about 15 years
ago.

They would work full-time for a contract house and went wherever the
real client was..

The surprising thing to me is they would have downtime occasionally
weeks or even months long where they continued to be paid, but there
was no paying client.

iirc, they had to go to the contract house's office during the
downtime.  I don't remember if they used the time for training, or
what.

Seems like one of my friends did this for about 10 years in the
1990-2000 time frame.  He claimed it paid better than a true permanent
position and he got full benefits.
