The main reason for the hesitancy (and a good reason as far as I'm
concerned) is that the Russians typically used those blasts to stop
natural gas fires on dry land. Nearly everything about the Deep
Horizon leak is new territory because of the depths and pressures
involved.
On a separate note, the blog set up by the leader of the UGA team
which is analyzing the plumes is interesting, and has links in the
"Resources" section to other good sources of info.
