My view on the entire subject: I like smooth peanut butter. I buy
smooth peanut butter. If you like crunchy, buy that. OSs are a tool:
Use the tool that supports your killer app. I don't like being tethered
to I-anything (service plans, lack of flash, do it our way (DRM) or not
at all, so I don't buy them. I have no need for a beefed up book
reader, or a very limited computer, so I don't buy one. If you want or
need one, buy one. My lack of interest is not a value judgment on your
choice, it just represents a lack of a use-case for me. My smart phone
costs me $1400 over a two year period, the I-phone costs (IIRC) $3900
over a two year plan with the same access features. Buy the one that
works for you, I personally like the lack of contract, unlimited voice,
text, and data for $50/month w/the ability to fire my provider at any
moment and take my phone else where. I have no need for an I-tether.
It is your money, do with it what you will.
