I haven't had to modify an xorg.conf file -- even for my dual display
setup -- in quite a long time. Probably 3 years or so? The GUI
configuration tools do the job effectively for me on my workstation, and
I find that I can (usually) focus on the work I'm doing.
There are times when I want something done in a way that is off the
beaten path, and I have to do it myself. For example, I had to install
coreutils 7.6 on my system not that long ago, manually, so that I could
take advantage of "cp --reflink" on btrfs. Somehow, I doubt that a
newbie would even think about using a COW filesystem, let alone manually
upgrading portions of their system so that they can use its features.
