Slackware, Damsmall Linux, and Puppy are good ones. But you want something
that feels like old school linux and is Rock Solid. NetBSD and FreeBSD are
great to look at was well.

Have you tried SUSE Studio? Need to create a Live CD,  an app you want to
package and distribute , or create your own linux distro. Give SUSE Studio a
try.
