Sockets are evil. The only thing that you should use them for is CPUs,
RAMS, EPROMS, etc. and use good quality ones then. HP never used
sockets for that reason -
they soldered the parts in and cut them out with diagonal cutters and
carefully desoldered
the pins to avoid lifting traces from the PC (or simply replaced the
card in questions as time
progressed.) Any old machine like a Apple II is full of corroding
sockets at this point (along
with electrolytic capacitors that are drying out if they have not been
plugged in for a while).
