Generally speaking, with Debian, it's a good idea to make friends with  
the /usr/share/doc directory. For many many Debian packages,  
particularly web based apps, they won't 'just work' when you apt them  
in. You generally have to either include a predefined config file, or  
add an Alias, or some other minor configuration detail in order to get  
them visible from the web servers point of view. Pretty much every  
package has a directory under /usr/share/doc and they all have a  
README.Debian file or something similar. Some packages are installed  
in a non working state on purpose, and you have to read the Debian  
specific documentation to make it work.

Since you're also configuring a server from scratch, I'll give you  
another little tip that drove me nuts the first time, and still  
occasionally catches me until I think about it - check the /etc/ 
default directory. Some packages install a file there that specifies  
how a daemon will load, and unless you change it there, it will drive  
you bonkers. snmpd is the one that usually gets me, it's not until I  
get a Nagios alert for my snmp checks failing that I have to remember  
to go pull the setting which binds it only to localhost out
