[ale] important config. files

At a minimum, I would backup:
/home
/root
/etc (particularly passwd, shadow, group, hosts, fstab and rc.local)
/opt
/usr/local
Also take a look at what's in /var, and if you can, just tarball the
whole thing. Some of the directories that commonly need to be backed up
there are:
/var/spool/cron
/var/lib/mysql
/var/www
