[ale] Toshiba External DVD drive issue

I just a Toshiba pa3761u external dvd burner. It works fine under
Vista, and the box claims linux supp. In ubuntu it is recognized and I
can get files off of it, but when I try to play dvds with mplayer i
get these a bunch of errors from mplayer like this:

a52: CRC check failed!  1.445 ct:  0.076  31/ 31 56% 35% 1588.3% 27 0
a52: CRC check failed!

dmesg is giving me a bunch like this:

Could this be an encryption issue?
