Google has nice APIs for non-interactive use of their services.
I was able to write a python script for backing up Google docs
pretty quickly, eliminating my major reservation about using
Google docs extensively for personal and work stuff.

Last time I looked into backing up my Gmail, I used IMAP as
the method, following some online tutorials, but "getmail" was
re-downloading already fetched mail.

I plan to revisit email backup using their APIs.  Maybe their are
good Gmail backup scripts out there already.  If not, I hope it's
as easy to write a python script as it was for the docs.
