I don't know what AT&T is shipping these days, but back when I had  
them and with the Westel modem they sent me, all I did was put the  
modem into bridge mode, put in my username and password in it's PPPoE  
config. It negotiated the authentication for me, and I was able to  
pull the public IP assigned to my account on one of the interfaces of  
my cisco router.

Most of the consumer grade broadband routers have pppoe clients built  
into them as well to do the same thing. I can't remember the last time  
I actually found it necessary to use the software an ISP shipped me  
just to connect to the internet
