Go to tty1 
attempt  startx
Find out what file in the /tmp directory needs to be deleted.
run xrandr without arguments

then run xrandr -r 1024x768 // the resolution is just an example from my xrandr list. 
You may have just gotten a poor set-up from the upgrade.  If you look at all the options available 
in xrandr, it is simple to see how many ways it could have gone wrong.

Once you have set the resolution, run startx and see how it looks.
