I have two Buffalo routers configured as bridges with the DD-WRT  
firmware. Both are configured (and enabled) as a "DHCP Forwarder"  
under the "Setup" -> "Basic Setup" tab. With this configuration,  
connected devices are able to get DHCP addresses from my primary DHCP  
server (ISC DHCP server running under CentOS 5.2). This did not work  
when I tried to use a Linksys WRT54GS with stock firmware as the DHCP  
server. I suspect that the Linksys DHCP server does not understand  
forwarded requests.

If you try the alternate firmware approach, you will definitely need  
alternate firmware on Router 2 to provide a DHCP Forwarder. You may  
also need alternate firmware on Router 1 to provide a better DHCP  
server. While I expect the DHCP server in DD-WRT understands  
forwarded requests, I've never tried it.

I don't know about other firmware options, but for DD-WRT, the  
WRT54GS2 (as opposed to a WRT54GS v2) is not on the supported list  
[1]. The WRT54G2 is supported, but only works with the "micro"  
edition of the firmware (this should be more than adequate for what  
you want to do).
