Brian's advice is always excellent, but it seems to me that you might
simply be facing an issue where your laptop monitor isn't as capable
as the external monitor and so the Suse tools won't let you config the
resolution past what your laptop screen can display .
If you're trying to set this up as a true dual head system then what
I'm suggesting should probably be ignored, but if you are just trying
to use a better monitor for when your laptop is at your desk, then
keeping the default screen resolution in range for the primary screen
would be important.
