[ale] R&D server for VMware ESX?

All,

One of our clients is trying run a app we develop/support under ESX
and it is falling down.  (ie. Won't even complete a single web
transaction.)

We need to buy a low-cost server for our debug efforts that can run
VMware ESX.  The ESX spec says it requires a dual-cpu machine minimum.

This is mostly related to functionality testing, not performance
testing, so I want to get something that is basically as low-cost as I
can get, but I don't want to spend time spec'ing a custom machine.

ie. Buying a Dell, etc. would be ideal

Does anyone have experience running a low-end server with ESX.  Does
it really require a dual-cpu.

Any specific low-end machine someone can say works for them?

FYI: At the end of the day we will have several ESX servers as part of
the full rollout process.  The client is going to provide one for
performance testing that will be identical to their production system.
