Not what I'd call speedy, but it seldom is on Windows.  That did it.  
Now the question is why did it work "out of the box" on Edgy but I've 
got to configure routes manually on Hardy?

Oh well, I'll keep a copy of this email on the laptop to remind me what 
I have to do.
