[ale] 2nd try. First never made it. Looking for a simple method to generate Spanish language characters.

You can use the us-intl keyboard layout.  It lets you type just about
every accent from most languages that use the roman alphabet.

I use us-intl as my normal layout, because once you get used to it, you
can type English words more properly, too, and I have always been
annoyed at ASCIIizations of things to make them more convenient.
Résumé, as an example.  :-)

Anyway, the international layout makes the ', ", `, ~, and ^ keys
"dead".  You can then press them, followed by a (supported) letter, and
you get the proper combination.  For example:
  '+e = é
  ^+e = ê
  ~+n = ñ

You also get another "layer" of keys.  Right-Alt will get them to you,
for example:
  <RightAlt>+, = ç
  <RightAlt>+; = ¶
  <RightAlt>+: = °
