Something else that I have learned recently---USB wires deteriorate over
time and can be the cause of very strange errors. I have had a couple
of wires that I have had to replace and then the peripheral attached to
them begins to work again. I have pretty much gotten used to the idea
that mysterious USB errors == try new cable or port, and if that doesn't
work, then maybe the device is dead.
