Bob,
Are you up and running yet with X? The absolute simplest and easiest way to deal with this is by going outside of the package management system. The legacy versions of the Nvidia driver are not always part of the packages provided. So...
Download manually the latest version of the 96xx series from Nvidia's linux driver archive. Make sure you have the Linux kernel source and symbol packages installed plus a gcc compile environment. If you can compile a kernel on the system, you will be fine. As root, run the nvidia install manually. Usually you have to init 3 to stop X and get to a multiuser w/out X runlevel. Type "sh nvidia_foo96xxbar.sh" to run the installation process. Accept the license and don't take the option to have the installation try to download from nvidia an appropriate kernel module that matches your kernel, since they don't exist. Allow it to compile your kernel module, search for X files to remove, install appropriate X files, and then you can have it modify your Xorg.conf file. After that just "startx" to see if it works. That usually works on OpenSuSE. In fact, if you ever have a Nvidia graphics chip builtin to the motherboard, you might be forced to this procedure. I found that out with a motherboard upgrade over the holidays for my wife. Got her a motherboard with builtin Nvidia FX7100 graphics onboard. The OpenSuSE routines in SaX2 would not see the chip, Ubuntu would not boot at all. I was able to install OpenSuSE by not trying to deal with accelerated graphics. After the system was up, I did the above procedure with the latest nvidia driver and it configured the chip just fine. I trust the nvidia download installation procedure much more than any of the distro video card routines.
