Hi Bob,
If you edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and remove the "nvidia" and
replace it with "nv" you can regain X again. It won't be the
hardware-accelerated 3D OpenGL graphics but it will work (usually unless
the card is _really_ old).
There is a kernel module the is required to fully use the NVidia
hardware. It's a PIA to keep it in sync but the hardware is great.
You can download the kernel module code from NVidia website and as long
as each running kernel has a build tree (install kernel-devel if using
stock release kernels) you can build a new kmod before you reboot. The
docs are good on the nvidia stuff.
I don't know if Mandriva has a repo like redhat/fedora/centos does in
livna. livna has kmod packages for many non-standard kernel modules
built to the released kernels from redhat/fedora/centos.
