[ale] grub loading issue

I have my laptop dual-boot, windows, Ubuntu.
When I changed the default to 0 ( ubuntu) before the menu came up I got the 
grub stage 1... text on my screen. Then it took 15 seconds to get to the 
actual grub menu where I could select linux or windows.
When I change the default to 5 ( Windows) and rebooted, it SNAPPED right to 
the selection menu with the highlighted entry being Windows.

why??
