[ale] OT: Java-6u11

The Sun Java site should have both rpm and bin packages. You should use
the latter for simplicity if you don't want it to replace the existing
rpm.

When I looked at the Sun Java site not too long ago for a 1.5.x and
didn't want to replace the installed Java from RedHat on my RHEL4 box I
did the following:

1) Downloaded 32 bit version of Java 1.5.0_17 (file name
jdk-1_5_0_17-linux-i586.bin) from java.sun.com site.
2) Transfered the file to /tmp on server
3) On server ran chmod 755 on file.
4) mkdir /tmp/jdk-1_5_0_17
5) cd /tmp/jdk-1_5_0_17
6) Ran ../jdk-1_5_0_17-linux-i586.bin to execute the downloaded file.
This extracted the files into the directory made.
7) Run the "java -version" on the Java executable in bin subdirectory
created by the previous step. This should indicate which version is
there.

Of course then you'd need to insure the path to this Java executable is
in your $PATH variable before the one to the system Java.

Subject: [ale] OT: Java-6u11

I have the need to use the latest Java plugin by SUN on Fedora 9 and
FireFox 3.0.5. I'm currently running the OpenJDK that goes with the
Fedora Distribution(s). I have tried with no success of removing it DL
Java from SUN and then run the installer. It claimed to have installed,
but it was not working. I then tried to remove it and rpm claimed that
it was not installed. I then tried redoing the rpm install and it
claimed that it was already installed. I eventually went back to the
original set up and all seems to be working at this point. Anyone have
any suggestions? 6u11 seems to be a lot different that the previous
versions. I don't remember having this much trouble trying to do this
before.

TIA

Scott
