If you've made many changes the you should do an upgrade.
The get around my X issue, I've been installing 7.10 then
do update, and finally an immediate upgrade to 8.04.  

The system I'm upgrading now is a bas 6.10 that I have
on an XP system for emergency use.  It is at the in-laws.
