It is a MathML version of Microsoft Equation Editor. So it is only a
little better than MEE. OOo Math is no replacement for a proper LaTeX
document.
When you choose "Insert equation" in OOo Writer, it starts a windowed
instance of OOo Math. The equation in the OOo Writer document is just
an OOo Math object.
