In the interest of throwing out possibilities, you could also try ata 
over ethernet [0]. It's a layer-2 protocol, and it's even simpler than 
ndb, which is simpler than iSCSI [1]. I wouldn't mind seeing comparisons 
of the installation difficulty, resource overhead, and throughput of all 
three.
