[ale] pop3 problems

every time I click on CHECK MAIL in kmail, it adds 17 processes, and 
eventually I can't send/receive mail.

any clues??
I check email, then run:
ps -ef|grep pop3

check mail again and:
pbc at Paulspc:~/bin> ps -ef|grep pop3|wc -l
33
