To solve the ISP's modem only talking to one MAC, do the following.
Determine the existing system's MAC address by checking its
configuration or connecting to its NAT with a switch or crossover
cable and running arpwatch.
Then set your system's MAC address to be the same via the following
(for Linux):
ifconfig eth0 hw ether 00:A0:3D:A7:D6:7E
