Want to know where the ideas came from that ended up as Star Trek?
Check out a copy of Forbidden Planet.  This is a remake of 
Shakespeare's "The Tempest" set on a distant planet. The 
television series simply shifts the Point Of View from that of the
characters on the planet to that of the crew of the space ship
that shows up uninvited. Complete with captain who woos the girl.
You'll recognize all sorts of special effects that were stolen as
well.
