I agree ith George Ytalk for inhouse chat sessions is great with your users.
If, however your referring to IRC Chat, my preferences are for a GUI based
session and ease of use: XChat.
For non-GUI based, BitchX or Epic with a nice little script added like Anduril
or others ( helps with windowing sessions etc ).

P.S. don't forget if you go with a non-GUI type to create/add/edit your .ircrc
file.
NOTE: the "#" those are comments and keep the specific line from being excuted
or to add comments.
Below is an example of one I use:
