Possible, I suppose, but not likely.  The machine had only been up for 15
minutes or so. 
For example, The box has been up now for a bit more than 4 hours and TOP
shows this:

Mem:   512200k total,    339948k used      175252k free
Swap: 1060208k total,    88840k used       971368k free

And the X server is only taking 6.1% of memory.
