Ubuntu gives the kernel type:

mbt at pepper:~$ uname -r
2.6.20-9-generic

And has "4.0" in /etc/debian_version.  I am not sure what other things
might exist other than /etc/issue, which reports "Ubuntu {codename}
(release)".
