[ale] USB-Storage, Auto-detection, and SuSE-9.3

I have two inexpensive[!] USB flash-card readers for my camera memories.  
Both take numerous type of memory card, stick, etc. One of the two mounts
CF and SD cards successfully under MsWin, SuSE-10.x, and SuSE-9.3. The
other works for both types under MsWin and SuSE-10.x, but SD cards are not
found by SuSE-9.3. CF flash cards are found automagically. (I didn't try 
other formats systematically.)

Different card types come up under different partitions, and the two
devices report different partition numbers for the same card types (so it 
doesn't sound like - say - IOmega's partition-4 obsession).

Can I configure SuSE-9.3 to check more partitions when it autodetects
the flash medium in a card reader? How can I re-activate the "How shall I
open xxx?" prompt panel that I deactivated in frustration with its leaping
on CD-ROM blanks?
