any chance you have an NVIDIA card??? they need to be installed and setup 
sometimes. checkout nvidia.com for the latest ddriver, download it and read 
teh HOW-TO-INSTALL or readme... whatever it is..
basically you run it, to install the driver, then run sax2 to configure it, 
then restart your X server.
