Take a look at SmoothGallery.  I don't think this is *exactly* what you were looking for, but I think you'll find it useful (or at least interesting):

It is a lightweight (16k), standards-compliant, javascript-based (hey, no flames on javascript vs standards-compliancy) photo gallery & photo slideshow.  Yes, it is GPL'd *and* the author has worked with the Foresight Linux distro. http://www.foresightlinux.org/

It's at least worth a look.  I purchased SlideShowPro w/ Director for use on Joomla!, but if I hadn't I probably would have incorporated this in its place.  Heck, I might still find a place for this anyway.

P.S.  It's good enough for ::gasp:: Microsoft:  http://www.microsoft.com/expression/default.aspx  (look at the source.  Yeah, they're using GPL code.)
