I'm on Southwest Bell in TX and have the same problem.
When I work in Atlanta, or just around town, I have to
use an external smtp. When I come home, I have to change
it back because SWB won't let me use an external smtp
server at home.
  I'll be in Atlanta for a couple of weeks and hope to make
it to another ale meeting.
