You are right! Different Protocols
GPRS I believe was a AT&T invention.
CDMA I think was a WorldCom, or predecessor, invention (Used by Sprint,
Verizon and others) It doesn't matter, except they are incompatible...

144 kb/s MAXIMUM for cell cdma phone, ~ 700 kb/s if device has EVDO
(only in major metro areas) Kyocera 650 has EVDO capability but not
offered here. (Tn)

Not like your Xircom, It has a wireless 2 band cellphone radio, and an
antenna. looks more like a 802.11X wifi card.

Data service only is for PCcard. Internet via cell phone is a "fluke"
- --Verizon and others use the "internet" protocols to do the GIN (get it
now)stuff, "Some" cell phone mfgrs provide USB cables for connections,
phone to computers. More recent/capable cell "appliances" use it more
openly..

If you have a laptop as your primary computing device, and it goes with
you, then a cellphone connection is "useful" when you can't get wifi.

Have fun. If you have a choice.. for whatever reasons... cell is not a
good primary internet connection.

Have a great day !
