[ale] Newbie question.

I am running fedora core 5 on a duel boot WinXP-fedora box. I am presently
in fedora as root at the init 3 level. I made the mistake of typing <shift>
X on the command line and wound up looking at a black screen with only the x
cursor showing.
I have tried just about everything I can think of to get out of it (i.e.
<Esc>, <ctrl> c, <alt> F1 etc, <ctrl><alt><del>) without rebooting the box
and crashing Linux.
I would appreciate any suggestions or procedures to remedy this situation.
