[ale] sendmail not automatically starting on boot

Probably was never on. I've had to start sendmail before but never
looked into it until today. We don't boot these servers often.

Thanks for reminding me of chkconfig though. I'd run across that
somewhere before but couldn't remember the name of it and earlier search
had only revealed a Debian equivalent.

this means at some point, 'chkconfig sendmail off' was run, or
something else to the effect.

D'oh!

I was starting to follow your suggestion when I focused on the
/etc/rc?.d/ scripts and realized there were only K scripts - no S
scripts which of course explains why it didn't start automatically.
Since I saw multiple scripts by doing "ls -l /etc/rc?.d/*sendmail" I
apparently didn't pay attention and it was only when looking
specifically in /etc/rc3.d that I realized it only had one script which
made me look at the others again and realize each of the my run level
directories only had kill scripts.

Check the rc scripts to see what starts up before and after sendmail.
In order for sendmail to successfully start you will need network and
probably bind (depending on your DNS config/setup).
