I've run into this problem before and each time it has been that the
default print system for the printer has been mis-set.
I use KDE almost exclusively so that's what I know. <shrug>
KDE Control Center > Peripherals > Printers: check the page (for each
printer) and verify that the "Print system currently used:" is set to
CUPS and not to one of the LPR/LPD options.
If that doesn't solve the problem, try (from the desktop menu)
System Settings > Printing (you'll need the root password) > Printer
configuration and see if something is fouled up there.
