[ale] System requirements for broadband?

You don't have to have MS Windows. I just went through this last week and
here's all you need:

1-all machines plugged into an Ethernet hub
2-all machines running dhclient
3-set the default route to 192.168.1.254
4-plug the modem into your phone line, and the hub

DONE !

You don't even need their installation CD at all.

Add the filters to all phone lines. They come with the modem. Also necessary
cables to
connect the modem to the hub are provided.

Any machine that can be configured to run dhclient will be instantly on the
web at bootup.
This assumes you don't have any firewall and that the modem is not set for
NAT, i.e. see
192.168.1.254

BTW you can get an Ethernet hub from e.g. Microcenter or Fry's for almost
nothin'. Don't forget
the cables. I guess you can also do all this wireless but I already had the
Ethernet stuff.

Incidentally, I, without exception, had polite and knowledgeable support at
all stages of implementing
the service but must admit they didn't know to tell me what I just told you.
They've been spoon fed the
info to shovel MS Windows at BS's customers, but that's not their fault.
Every service person I dealt with,
I 'pushed' support for Linux, etc....

HTH,
Courtney
