Courtney,
Are you still just doing this as a learning experience or are you in a
hurry. If I was in a hurry, I would not bother trying to get that
drive to boot, I would do a fresh install to a new drive, mount the
old partitions and copy files/data from old to new.
If you do want to keep troubleshooting I will let someone else step
in, but you probably need to start a new thread and describe the boot
loader (lilo?) and the distro etc.
Specifically, boot issues vary pretty broadly between different
distros. That is definitely a part of the process that is not yet
fully standardized.
