Just for closure (and for future web-searches - when I forget what I did
8-):
I went one step too far. GoAhead's port for HTTPS (SSL) connections is
defined separately from that for HTTP connections, so I was stepping on my
own [foot] by setting 'port' to 443, the default for HTTPS. Now it's
working consistently.

In fact it was causing contention for which connection was actually
