[ale] What am I missing?

I need to compile some goods on Xubuntu.  I can not seem to do that.

cfowler at cfowler-laptop:~/mysql-4.1.18$ gcc -o test ./test.c
/usr/bin/ld: crt1.o: No such file: No such file or directory
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status

I'm missing a package.
