Gentoo here as well. What remote did you use?  The included or third 
party.  I'm also working on getting a mvp working. 
(http://www.hauppauge.com/html/mediamvp_datasheet.htmA).  Just haven't 
had the time.  I picked one up for $35 at Radio Shack late last year.
