[ale] GRUB Installation Failure?

Hi,
Tonight I reinstalled Windows XP on a friends laptop. They're dual-booting
Kubuntu; the drive setup is

Disk /dev/hda: 40.0 GB, 40007761920 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 4864 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

After installing Windows I booted from an Ubuntu 6.10 live cd to reinstall
grub.

It found boot where I expected it to and seemed to install fine. However,
once the BIOS screen passes I'm left with a flashing cursor instead of a
GRUB menu.Can anyone imagine why or recommend some troubleshooting tips?
