Since we're being all parochial and all... :)
"We" (Gentooistas) don't have "releases"...
We have profiles that get updated on a more or less annual basis, but
all of our packages are updated independently of one another. The
Portage system on a Gentoo machine synchronizes all the packages with
the distribution's master source database at install time and can be
made to re-synchronize at any point. Portage also keeps the
dependencies straight.
Of course, updating, say, xorg, KDE, or Gnome can take quite a while,
but a lot of the time, my emerges of packages are very short.
You get used to it. Distcc and ccache help. Dual-cores help.
