are you _sure_ you are using CUPS and not the lpr command to print?

If you are using KDE, 
Control Center > printers > Print system currently used:
This should read CUPS and not LPR/LPRng Print System

The lpr print system is not part of CUPS.  They are different and
they do not work well together.
