[ale] Performance Problems

My system has been having 2 performance problems -

1) Save as --> The application ( Firefox 1.5) just hangs for about 30-40
sec as soon as the save as window appears.
2) Printing - I have a HP Officejet 4215. Installation was smooth - I
didn't have to do anything - the system recognized the printer and
automatically installed all the driver. Print quality is great. BUT it
takes 1 minute between issuing the print command and the start of
printing. During this time the application hangs.
Here is the print command  "/usr/bin/lpr -P HPOffJet4200 -o PageSize=A4"

What could be the cause of these problems? Are they interrelated?
